What dry eye actually is
Every blink spreads a thin film across the front of your eye. It’s not just water: it’s water, a layer of oil that keeps the water from evaporating, and mucus that helps it stick. Dry eye is what happens when that film breaks down, and it usually breaks down in one of two ways.
Either you’re not making enough tears, or, far more often, the oil glands in your eyelids get clogged and your tears evaporate too fast. That’s why the fix is rarely just “more drops.” A good regimen works on all of it: replacing the tears, reopening the oil glands, and keeping the lids clean.
